Fossil-Free Sweden and Viable Cities Launch a Joint Letter of Intent

Fossil-Free Sweden and Viable Cities are launching a joint letter of intent with the goal of halving emissions from new construction projects. Industrial wood construction can play an important role in the transition through efficient production, smart use of resources, and materials with a low climate impact.

According to Fossil-Free Sweden, methods and technologies already exist today to reduce emissions from new construction by up to 50 percent, without necessarily increasing costs. As part of this initiative, “Hälften bort” is being launched—a checklist that helps stakeholders in construction projects identify and prioritize measures that deliver significant climate benefits at low cost.

Climate action needs to begin early—as early as the concept and preliminary study phases—and be followed through throughout the entire construction process. This is where wood construction can contribute to progress. Wood is a renewable building material that stores biogenic carbon throughout the building’s lifespan. Furthermore, through industrial manufacturing, optimized material use, and prefabricated building systems, there are opportunities to streamline production, reduce waste, and simplify the construction process.

For companies in the industrial wood processing sector, these developments present opportunities to contribute to more climate-smart building solutions. Through thoughtful material selection, resource-efficient production methods, and collaboration throughout the entire construction chain, wood construction can become an important part of the transition toward buildings with a significantly lower climate impact.
